Coronation Rites Around the World

Westminster Abbey has staged every English crowning since 1066, with the coronation chair made for Edward I in 1301 still in use. Japanese emperors receive the regalia of sword, jewel and mirror in rites closed to cameras.

Thai kings are anointed with waters gathered from sacred rivers across the kingdom. In Tonga and Eswatini ceremonies blend tradition with pageantry, while most European monarchies now settle for simple proclamation and oath before parliament.
