About CrownDB
CrownDB is a reference guide to 97 rulers and dynasties: 89 individual monarchs and 8 royal houses, spanning more than four and a half thousand years from Khufu, builder of the Great Pyramid, to the 5 reigning monarchs in the collection, among them Charles III, Naruhito and Felipe VI.
What each entry contains
Every page gives the ruler’s title, the realm, the house or dynasty and the reign dates, with a short account of what the reign is remembered for. Royal house pages give the period the house ruled and where it came from. Dates for the ancient world, especially Egyptian, Persian and early Chinese reigns, follow the conventional chronology and are approximate; dates marked c. are uncertain by several years.
How the collection was chosen
The list favours monarchs that historians treat as turning points, founders, conquerors, reformers and last rulers, rather than aiming at complete king lists. Coverage is broad but uneven: England and France are better represented than, say, the kingdoms of West Africa, and some rulers given the title emperor or king here held other styles in their own languages.
Sources and corrections
Reign dates and facts were checked against standard references such as Encyclopaedia Britannica, royal household and national archive sources, and the scholarly literature summarized on Wikipedia. Errors are corrected as they are found.
