Cnut the Great
Life and reign
Viking king of Denmark who conquered England in 1016 and ruled a North Sea empire of England, Denmark, Norway and parts of Sweden. His law codes and church patronage surprised those expecting a barbarian. The later tale of him commanding the tide shows him rebuking flatterers by proving that a king cannot.
