First Plantagenet king, ruler of an empire from Scotland to the Pyrenees. He reformed royal justice, extending circuits of traveling judges and shaping English common law. His conflict with Archbishop Thomas Becket ended in the 1170 murder in Canterbury Cathedral that shocked Christendom.
