Charles I
Life and reign
His eleven year personal rule without parliament and religious reforms ignited civil war. Defeated twice by parliamentary armies, he was tried for treason by a special court and executed outside the Banqueting House in January 1649, the only English king put to death by formal judgment. Britain became a republic for eleven years.
