Life and reign
The red bearded emperor who sought to restore imperial power in Italy, destroying Milan in 1162 before the Lombard League defeated him at Legnano in 1176. He made peace with the pope and the cities, joined the Third Crusade, and drowned in the Saleph river in Anatolia in 1190, his legend growing ever after.
