George III
Life and reign
The first Hanoverian king born in Britain and to speak English as his first language, he reigned 59 years, a record until his granddaughter Victoria surpassed it. He lost the thirteen American colonies in the revolution of 1776 to 1783 and faced the Napoleonic wars. Recurrent mental illness led to the Regency of his son from 1811.
