Emperor of Ethiopia, styled Conquering Lion of Judah, who appealed in person to the League of Nations against the 1935 Italian invasion. Restored in 1941, he modernized schools and law, hosted the Organization of African Unity, and is revered as divine in the Rastafari faith. Deposed by the Derg in 1974.
