Zhu Yuanzhang, born a destitute peasant orphan who became a monk and rebel, then founder of the Ming dynasty in 1368. He restored Han rule, redistributed land and wrote fierce instructions against tyranny. Paranoid in old age, he purged thousands of officials yet left a dynasty of 276 years.
