James VI and I
Life and reign
First Stuart king of England, already king of Scots for 36 years, uniting the crowns in 1603. He sponsored the King James Bible of 1611, survived the Gunpowder Plot of 1605 and championed divine right kingship. He styled himself king of Great Britain, though parliaments refused the formal union until 1707.
