Tamerlane, the lame conqueror of Samarkand who styled himself heir of Genghis. He sacked Delhi, Damascus and Baghdad and defeated the Ottomans at Ankara in 1402, sparing Constantinople for a time. His capital glittered with captured artisans, and his descendant Babur founded the Mughal empire.
