Greatest Mughal emperor, enthroned at 13 in 1556; later that year his regent Bairam Khan secured the throne at the second battle of Panipat. He created an efficient tax system on measured land, abolished the jizya and pilgrim taxes and pursued sulh i kul, universal peace, with Hindus in high office. His court sponsored art, translation and inquiry.
