Ashoka
Life and reign
Grandson of Chandragupta, he ruled nearly all South Asia from Afghanistan to Bengal. After the bloodsoaked conquest of Kalinga he embraced Buddhism, issued edicts on pillars and rocks across the empire preaching tolerance and welfare, and sent missions abroad. His lion capital is the emblem of India today.
