Charlemagne
Life and reign
King of the Franks crowned Emperor of the Romans by Pope Leo III in Rome on Christmas Day 800. He united most of western Europe for the first time since Rome and promoted the Carolingian renaissance of learning, and the division of his empire among his grandsons at Verdun in 843 foreshadowed France and Germany.
