Life and reign
Hirohito, whose 62 year reign spanned the war in China, the Pacific war, defeat, occupation and the transformation into a pacifist economic power. He renounced divinity in 1946 and served as a symbolic monarch thereafter, and in 1971 became the first reigning Japanese emperor to travel abroad.
