The dynasty that began as Swiss counts and grew to hold the Holy Roman empire almost continuously from 1438, plus Spain and its empire, Hungary, Bohemia and the Netherlands. Motto: let others wage war, you happy Austria marry. It ended with the fall of Austria Hungary in 1918.
