Augustus
Life and reign
Born Gaius Octavius, heir of Julius Caesar, he won the civil wars and became the first Roman emperor, styling himself princeps, first citizen. The Pax Romana began under him, along with a building programme that remade Rome in marble. He ruled for four decades and was deified after his death in AD 14.
