Marcus Aurelius
Life and reign
Philosopher king, author of the Meditations written on campaign, the private stoic reflections still widely read. He spent much of his reign fighting Marcomannic wars on the Danube and a devastating plague. His death ended the adoptive succession, as his son Commodus took the purple.
