Louis XVI
Life and reign
Well meaning but indecisive king whose support for the American revolution strained finances and brought France to bankruptcy. The Estates General of 1789 became the revolution, the Bastille fell, monarchy was abolished in 1792, and he was guillotined in January 1793 for conspiracy against public liberty.
