Basil II
Life and reign
The Bulgar Slayer, under whom Byzantium reached its greatest medieval extent from Italy to Armenia. He campaigned every year, lived like a soldier, never married, and left the treasury full and the empire dominant. His death in 1025 began the long decline of the medieval Roman state.
