Life and reign
The Tsar Liberator, who freed 23 million serfs in 1861, the greatest single reform in Russian history, followed by courts, local assemblies and military reform. He sold Alaska in 1867. After surviving attempts, he was killed by bomb throwers in 1881, the day he approved mild constitutional changes.
