Ivan IV the Terrible
Life and reign
Crowned first Tsar of All Russia in 1547. He conquered Kazan and Astrakhan, opened Siberia, created a secret police of oprichnina and killed his own heir in a rage. His reign built the autocracy that ruled Russia until 1917. The epithet grozny means fearsome more than terrible.
