Life and reign
Two meters tall, he studied shipbuilding in Dutch yards, then built a navy and a new capital, Saint Petersburg, founded in 1703 on marshland at the mouth of the Neva. He crushed Sweden at Poltava in 1709 and took the title of Emperor in 1721, forcing Russia into European great power politics.
